Ordinarily, high levels of value chain integration guarantee resilience in times of economic hardship. The COVID-19 pandemic paints a different picture. A large share of Africa’s exports go to nations most affected by the COVID-19 virus, and so the travel restrictions, export bans, quarantines and factory closures imposed in these countries have significantly disrupted African value chains.
