When innovation meets impact on Kenya’s toughest terrain

At Africa Practice, we believe in reimagining markets, changing the narrative, and rewriting the rules. That’s why we’re proud to be a founding sponsor of EV Explorers — the pioneering team that just made history by unveiling the first electric vehicle ever to compete in the Rhino Charge, one of the world’s toughest off-road events.

Led by our own Partner, Richard Kiplagat, EV Explorers isn’t just an ambitious engineering project — it’s a physical embodiment of our mission to create transformational change. It’s a bold, dust-covered, zero-emissions symbol of how innovation can drive impact at the intersection of technology, conservation, and mobility.

A first for Rhino Charge, and for Kenya

The annual Rhino Charge event has long tested the limits of endurance and ingenuity. This year, the launch of a fully electric entrant signals a shift in the competition’s evolution and Kenya’s broader electric mobility journey. Backed by a powerful consortium of partners including Base Titanium, Safaricom, Valar, KenGen, KCB and others, the EV Explorers initiative showcases African innovation at its best — proving that sustainable technology is not just the future, but the present.

As Richard said at the launch: “We wanted to raise awareness and funds with conservation and climate change in mind. A zero-emissions car was our way of showing what’s possible — and bringing some new excitement to the event.”

From conservation to innovation

EV Explorers is more than a technical feat. It’s part of a movement to accelerate sustainable transport, support local talent, and inspire a new generation of innovators to think beyond traditional limits.

By supporting Rhino Ark, the initiative also directly contributes to vital conservation efforts. To date, Rhino Ark has constructed over 650km of electric fencing, protecting mountain ecosystems like the Aberdares and Mount Kenya — and the communities that depend on them.

As Rhino Ark’s Deputy Director Gloria Waswa noted, “Welcoming the first electric vehicle into this competition marks a natural evolution… where technology becomes a platform for conservation leadership.”

Policy momentum and the road ahead

The EV Explorers project emerges at a time of growing national momentum around e-mobility. From tax incentives and dedicated tariffs to ambitious policy targets, Kenya is fast becoming a continental leader in electric transport. This supportive environment enables projects like EV Explorers to thrive — and Africa Practice is proud to help accelerate that shift by championing the ideas, people, and policies that power sustainable progress.

A signal of possibility.

For us at Africa Practice, EV Explorers is more than a sponsorship. It’s a moment of pride. A living example of what it means to embody the values we hold dear: innovation, courage, and a deep commitment to Africa’s future.

We hope this sparks imaginations, opens new partnerships, and inspires others to rethink what’s possible.
